For the first time in probably ever, Matt Nieto is front and center.
Selected third by the NLEX Road Warriors in the Gilas Pilipinas Draft, Nieto gets a headstart in running the national team for the 2023 FIBA World Cup.
And who’s a better candidate than Matt, who’s been the steady force behind Ateneo’s latest UAAP dynasty.
“Now being recognized sa Gilas. Actually this is the first time that I was getting recognition talaga because I’ve always been under the radar by the coaches, by the players,” Nieto said.
“Masaya rin pala makilala minsan pero I’m just happy and of course who doesn’t wanna play for the country?” he added.
Playing point for the Blue Eagles, Nieto feels like this Gilas stint was the true end goal, aside from making it to the PBA.
He may not be the most talented of the initial five prospects drafted to Gilas but you can bet he’s going to be the most mature out of the bunch.
“Of course number one is my leadership on the court. Coach Tab groomed me to be a leader inside and outside the court, and of course my toughness,” he said.
“I’ve been recognized for being tough, being a competitive player by coaches and players, so expect n ahindi talaga ako magpapatalo kahit kanino. Kahit sino pa yung kalaban, lalaban ako and bibigay ko yung buong puso ko para sa bayan,” Nieto added.
Playing for Gilas and the PBA waiting in the wings, Matt Nieto can’t be more happy with his basketball career at the moment.
For him, it’s now time to perform.
“I’m just happy and I just hope di lang ako magdi-disappoint ng mga tao na nagtiwala sa akin na nagtiwala sa akin para umabot ako dito,” Nieto said.
“And of course sa NLEX family ko na nagtiwala na kinuha nila ako, di ko sila idi-disappoint. Lalaban ako para sa kanila,” he added.
