A lot of people were surprised when star Knight Bong Quinto fell into the second round of the 2018 PBA Draft, including Meralco head coach Norman Black.
Black was surprised because he didn’t think he’d have a shot at Quinto.
The Bolts took Quinto and while the payoff was long, the payoff was worth it as Quinto helped power Meralco to the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup Finals.
Quinto scored a career-high 19 points in Meralco’s decisive Game 5 win over TNT, his early fourth-quarter work allowed the Bolts to truly pull away.
Coach Norman was impressed.
“Bong Quinto has been a revelation. Like I've said before, I was literally shocked when we picked him in the second round. I couldn't believe he was sitting there,” Black said.
“He might be one of the biggest steals ever in the history of the PBA Draft, and he's just one of those guys that does everything,” coach Norman added.
Those are certainly powerful words from a Grand Slam coach and Quinto is just thankful for the doors opened for him by Black.
As a second-round pick, Quinto just wants to keep proving himself.
Sa buong first round, sino pa bang rookie ang nandiyan?” he added.
