PBA Finals: Ginebra on the board first after pulsating Game 1 win

The opening act of The Trilogy delivers in more ways than one.
Japeth Aguilar blocked Allen Durham’s game-tying shot late and Barangay Ginebra managed to escape with a pulsating 91-87 win in Game 1 of the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup Finals Tuesday at the Big Dome.
Down two, the Bolts tried to go for the tie with Durham driving strong to the basket. But Japeth met him at the top, essentially preserving the victory for the Gin Kings.
Justin Brownlee iced the win with two free throws in the last 11 seconds and Ginebra is up 1-0 in the best-of-7 showdown.
In an entertaining back-and-forth showdown, the Gin Kings found themselves staring at a 10-point deficit in the second half.
But Brownlee carried the Ginebra offense, pouring a total of 38 points to along with 16 rebounds to keep the Gin Kings afloat.
Aguilar and LA Tenorio then helped finish the job, taking turns hitting crucial hits in the fourth. They finished with 16 and 14 points respectively.
Meralco had three 20-point scorers led by Allen Durham with 25 points, 18 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Chris Newsome was sensational in the fourth for the Bolts, scoring nine as he took over when the Meralco offense turned stagnant. Newsome ended up with 24 points in a losing effort.
Raymond Almazan’s debut Finals game for Meralco saw him contribute 20 points and 13 rebounds.
The series shifts to Quezon province with Game 2 Friday at Lucena.

Meralco 87 - Durham 25, Newsome 24, Almazan 20, Amer 9, Caram 4, Quinto 3, Hodge 0, Faundo 0, Pinto 0.
