LUCENA — In Game 1 of the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup Finals against Barangay Ginebra, Meralco had three 20-point scorers, but somehow only scored a total of 87 in regulation.
They lost too and trail the best-of-7 series rather early.
Meralco’s strength in this Finals is that the Bolts should be deeper with more scoring options and yet they had top-heavy production in a Game 1 loss.
The Bolts will need more starting with Game 2 here Friday and head coach Norman Black has singled out guard Baser Amer as someone who should put up more points on the board.
“We have to try to find a way to get Baser to break through against this team,” Black said.
Amer, Meralco’s no. 1 point guard, has been mostly under the radar for the Bolts even in the previous two Finals agianst the Gin Kings.
In Game 1 Tuesday, Baser played 28 minutes and scored just nine points.
“He struggled even in the last couple of championship series that we played against them [Ginebra],” Black said of Amer.
“He just has to dig deep and break through, and have a good game against the Ginebra team and against LA. He played pretty well against them in the elimination round, but of course this is completely different story now here in the Finals,” coach Norman said.
