Phoenix hands San Miguel Beer its second straight defeat in a pocket tournament.
Phoenix used a third quarter blast to create a comfortable cushion on its way to a 108-90 win over San Miguel Beer in the Phoenix Super Basketball pocket tournament at the Upper Deck in Pasig City on Wednesday.
Matthew Wright starred for the Fuel Masters’ first win in two outings, scoring 19 points off 7-of-16 field goals, and had plenty of help as four other Phoenix players scored in double figures.
Jason Perkins had 17 points, Justin Chua scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Fuel Masters. Jay-R Reyes added 13 markers while Jorey Napoles finished with 11 points and 12 boards.
Holding on to a slim 53-50 lead to start the second half, the Fuel Masters went on a 15-4 scoring barrage to extend it to a 68-54 advantage after Brian Huruela’s lay-up with 3:17 left in the third.
Phoenix was never threatened from there to hand the defending Philippine Cup champion Beermen their second straight defeat in as many starts.
Arwind Santos led SMB, who is missing a key player in injured June Mar Fajardo (fractured shin), with 17 points. Chris Ross had 14 markers while Paul Zamar had 10 for the Beermen, who also missed the services of Marcio Lassiter (nose).
