San Miguel’s June Mar Fajardo has enjoyed an unprecedented run of dominance in the PBA.
Since being drafted first in the 2012 Draft, Fajardo has won six MVP awards, eight BPC awards, and eight championships. He could easily be the greatest of all time now and yet at 30 years old, he’s still only entering the peak of his powers.
With that being said, June Mar’s current run has encountered a speed bump, not just a normal one too.
Regardless of when the PBA season resumes following the COVID-19 outbreak, it has been long established that Fajardo could be out for the season.
The reason? A broken leg suffered in practice, without a doubt June Mar’s greatest challenge to date as a professional basketball player.
“Sobrang hirap, kasi nung una pag matutulog ka like nung first weeks ko, pag pipikit ka as in magfa-flashback yung nangyari,” Fajardo said, dealing with his injury not only physically, but mentally too.
“Sobrang sakit, sobrang lala. Pero yun nga, lagi ko na lang inaaliw yung sarili ko. Di ko na lang iniisip. Alam ko naman na malalagpasan ko rin to eh,” he added.
Even while recovering from injury, June Mar was officially named PBA Most Valuable Player for the 6th straight year, extending his all-time record.
That streak will be broken this season, and San Miguel Beer’s championship bid, especially in the All-Filipino, is also greatly compromised with him out.
However, Fajardo has his full trust on his battle-tested teammates.
“Walang imposible. Malakas naman yung team namin,” June Mar said.
“Nakaka-lungkot na wala ako doon, wala ako sa court. Pero masaya ako Makita sila ulit, then ditto lang ako susuporta sa kanila,” he added.
The road to recovery is underway for Fajardo, quite literally too.
Not being able to walk, Fajardo used his mobility scooter to pick up his latest MVP trophy. There’s no doubt he’s going to “scoot” his way back in the league soon as well.
“Kahit gaano kasama yung araw natin, 24 hours lang din yun eh,” Fajardo said.
“Lilipas din yun. So ayun, bad day lang yun, not a bad life,” June Mar added.
