Former Ateneo de Manila and University of the Philippines players team up for Perlas Lady Spikers.
Veteran stars of Katipunan neighbors Ateneo de Manila University and University of the Philippines banner the Perlas Lady Spikers’ campaign in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference starting Sunday.
Former Lady Eagles Dzi Gervacio, Ella De Jesus and Jem Ferrer team up with ex-Lady Maroons Kathy Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon under UP head coach Jerry Yee.
Adding firepower to Perlas are Brazilian reinforcement Rupia Inck and Japanese setter Naoko Hashimoto.
The core of team are composed of players that saw action in the V-League carrying the BaliPure banner.
Seasoned hitter Sue Roces, Sasa Devanadera, Amy Ahomiro and Mae Tajima are all back with the addition of former Adamson spiker Amanda Villanueva and former Ateneo Lady Eagle and UAAP Rookie of the Year Kara Acevedo.
Gervacio hopes that the chemistry and familiarity of the core with how they play will be their biggest advantage come game time.
“I believe one of the good things, one of the factors that make up a good team is chemistry,” said Gervacio. “We have chemistry. Having a good chemistry with a team has its advantages naman. ‘Yung parang hindi na nagkakailangang gumalaw like running towards the ball hindi na nagkakagawan, hindi na kailangang magturuan kung sino ang kukuha.”
The squad she added, is now slowly jelling with their imports especially with Hashimoto’s playmaking.
“OK naman were fine tuning na lang like the timing of Naoka’s set,” she said.” Also ‘yung defense position for example kay Rupia kasi iba-iba ang system ng defense.”
Perlas will open its campaign against the Alysssa Valdez-led Creamline on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Game time is at 6:00 p.m.
The opening playdate will air live over S+A Channel 23, S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.
Games are every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
