Despite having only three practice sessions with BaliPure, Jerrili Malabanan came off the bench to help power the Water Defenders in the Premier Volleyball League.
Out of nowhere, BaliPure found an unlikely hero in Jerrili Malabanan to open its campaign in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference.
Forced to play All-Filipino Sunday, the Water Defenders got an unexpected scoring punch from Malabanan as the FEU Lady Tamaraw came off the bench to score 12 points.
Malabanan was so effective for BaliPure she even took care of the game-winning point in the fourth set as the Water Defenders cruised to victory after dropping the opening set to the Philippine Air Force.
All of that while attending only three practices so far with BaliPure.
"Yung bata, madaling turuan. Tahimik lang, pangiti-ngiti lang. [But] it works for her so bayaan na lang," head coach Roget Gorayeb said talking about Malabanan, all praises for a player from a rival UAAP school.
"Laking tulong samin," he added.
For her part, Malabanan says adjustment came easy for her all thanks to the welcoming arms of her BaliPure teammates.
"Super welcoming yung team sakin. Even though it's only been three days, it feels like it's been longer than that," she said.
And with the Water Defenders having a shorter rotation compared to FEU, Malabanan is confident she can continue having good games for BaliPure in the PVL.
"I play the same position [with FEU and BaliPure] so I think the roles are the same but we have less people on our team here so I think I have more of a chance to contribute," Malabanan said.
