Power Smashers, BaliPure face off for early lead
BaliPure shoots for its second straight win.

BaliPure and Power Smashers dispute the early lead on Tuesday when the two opening day winners collide in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Looking to build momentum after their respective debuts, the Purest Water Defenders and Power Smashers take center court in their 4:00 p.m. tussle followed by the Perlas Lady Spikers’ match against Philippine Air Force Jet Spikers at 6:30 p.m.

Matches will air via livestream.

BaliPure, Power Smashers and Perlas all won their opening assignments last Sunday.

Behind NCAA Most Valuable Player Grethcel Soltones’ 16 points and the combined 24 markers of Risa Sato and Jerrili Malaban, the Water Defenders shot down the Jet Spikers, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21, three days ago.

On the other hand, the Power Smashers scored a huge upset when they defeated the multi-titled Pocari Sweat, 25-9, 25-22, 25-21, in a shocking fashion that put the Nes Pamilar-mentored squad under the radar of title contenders.

With the core of reigning NCAA champion Arellano University’s Regine Arocha, Jovelyn Prado and Andrea Marzan and University of Sto. Tomas recruit Dim Pacres playing cohesively, the Power Smashers are expected to give BaliPure a tough challenge.

Meanwhile, Perlas is looking for a fitting follow up after the Lady Spikers’ masterful dismantling of the Alyssa Valdez-led Creamline Cool Smashers, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-21.

Former Ateneo de Manila players Amy Ahomiro and Dzi Gervacio registered 17 and 13 points, respectively, for Perlas the last time out.

Backing them up in their attempt to remain unscathed are ex-University of the Philippines stars Kathy Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon.

After its first day setback, Air Force is raring to barge in the win column but will need a lot of effort coming from seasoned player Jocemer Tapic, Joy Cases, Iari Yongco, May Anne Pantino and setter Wendy Semana.

In the men’s division, Café Lupe takes on Sta. Elena at 1:00 p.m.
