Cignal escaped with a five-set decision over Philippine Army to climb on top of the standings.
Cignal kept its perfect record intact but not after a tough battle against a pesky Philippine Army side, 25-27, 25-12, 21-25, 25-17, 15-8, Tuesday in men’s division of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The HD Spikers had the extra gas in the tank in the fifth set, breaking the deciding frame wide-open 12-6 on their way to submitting the Troopers.
Cignal fashioned an unblemished 3-0 win-loss record for the solo lead.
Mark Alfafara and skipper Ysay Marasigan led Cignal’s assault with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Alfafara blasted 15 spikes with three aces and a kill block while Marasigan nailed 14 of the HD Spikers’ 61 attack points coming off the 44 excellent sets tallied by playmaker Vince Mangulabnan.
Rex Intal and Lorenzo Capate scored 12 points each while Peter Torres got 11 for Cignal.
Army dropped its first match in three games and slid to second to third spots tied with Sta. Elena.
Team captain Benjaylo Labide scored 16 points while former University of Sto. Tomas standout Romnick Rico got 13 for the Troopers.
