Risa Sato sliced a quick attack in BaliPure's four-set win over Creamline.
Grethcel Soltones and Risa Sato powered BaliPure back in the win column with crucial plays down the stretch as the Purest Water Defenders sliced through Creamline, 26-24, 17-25, 25-23, 28-26, in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The duo rallied the Purest Water Defenders back from 21-24 down in the exciting fourth set to seal the victory and improve BaliPure’s win-loss record to 4-1.
Sato finished with 16 points coming off 13 attacks, two kill blocks and an ace while Jerrili Malabanan had 15 markers for the Water Defenders, who rebounded from a loss at the hands of Perlas. Soltones had 12 while Aiko Urdas got 10 for BaliPure, which played without Jorelle Singh (sorethroat).
"One miss, you die yun eh (sa fourth set). Ako naman may fifth set eh buti sana kung ang set na yun kapag nanalo sila talo na kami, yun ang mas mabigat para sa amin. Pero 'yun may chance pa kami," said BaliPure coach Roger Gorayeb. "Ang laki pa ng chance namin. Buti na lang gumana ang block, umayos ang set ni Jasmine (Nabor), si Sato ang mga quick. Nag-connect na sila ni Jas eh."
With the Cool Smashers threatening to send the match to a fifth set, three-time NCAA Most Valuable Player Soltones hammered a thunderous attack followed by a quick hit by Sato to chop the Water Defenders’ deficit to one. A long attack by Cool Smashers star Alyssa Valdez tied the frame at 24.
Macy Mendiola gave BaliPure the lead, 25-24, with her ace but Valdez equalized with a kill. Another quick by Sato pushed the Water Defenders back at match point before BaliPure setter Jasmine Nabor gave Creamline another chance with tip that went out.
Malabanan, who had a couple of errors in the fourth set as BaliPure went behind 17-20, put the Water Defenders back at match point with an off the block kill before Sato sealed the win with a well-timed kill block off an over-receive by the Cool Smashers.
Valdez once again delivered an all-around play with 27 points anchored on 23 attacks and four kill blocks while adding 16 digs on the defensive end for the Cool Smashers, who dropped to 2-4 slate.
Pau Soriano got 15 while Francesca Racraquin got 11 for Creamline, which gave away 36 points off errors.
