Creamline imports brought in the much-needed support for local star Alyssa Valdez.
Finally, Alyssa Valdez got some help.
The local volleyball star didn’t need to score as much as she did in Creamline’s first six games with imports Kuttika Kaewpin of Thailand and Laura Schaudt of the United States chipping in on offense and defense in the Cool Smashers' morale-boosting 21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-13, win over Pocari Sweat Saturday in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference.
Kaewpin and Schaudt had to sit out Creamline’s first six outings for lack of International Transfer Certificates. During their absence, Valdez had to shoulder most of the team’s offense averaging 25 points per game while putting up 3.36 digs per set on the defensive end.
But with both imports already cleared to play, Valdez had the support she needed to topple the streaking Lady Warriors, who saw its six-game rampage snapped.
Kaewpin, Valdez’s teammate in the Thai League club 3BB Nakornnont, finished with game-high 20 points while Schaudt had 14. Kaewpin added 15 digs and eight excellent receptions.
“’Yun nga sabi ni coach very excited to play and to help (ang mga imports) and nag-contribute ang mga imports din sa team,” said Valdez, who scored 18.
Valdez also lauded the leadership and intensity that Kaewpin brought to the team that came off a loss and went up against much taller squad.
“Teammate ko rin siya when I was in Thailand so doon pa lang makikita mo pa lang, na hindi lang siya leader kundi (nandoon) ‘yung will to fight and ‘yung will to win niya nandoon talaga. Sino ba naman ang di gustong maging teammate ang ganoon?” said Valdez, who played for 3BB Nakornnont early this year.
Still, Valdez credited the whole team.
“From defense, may offense, maganda 'yung blocking. Siguro maganda lang ang gising ng lahat and the training really paid off today,” she said. “Hopefully naman natulungan din namin ang import naming sa game today, hindi lang kami yung natulungan nila yun naman ang gusto natin.”
“I think its an overall effort of the team,” Valdez added.
