Very new also rin. Hindi naman ako usually pinapasok for receive and defense rin but it was a good experience also for me -- Alyssa Valdez
Superstar Alyssa Valdez came off the bench Tuesday for the first time in Creamline’s nine outings in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference, as head coach Tai Bundit gave the tournament’s leading scorer a chance to rest.
The power-hitter was benched the whole first set and played the role a reliever in the next four frames in the quarterfinals-bound Cool Smashers’ 25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 18-25, 7-25, loss at the hands of BaliPure, which clinched the first outright semifinals berth, Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
“Originally talaga ‘yun naman talaga (ang plan na off the bench ako),” said the former three-time UAAP Most Valuable Player, who is nursing a lingering sore right ankle. “Kapag tinawag ka naman talaga kailangan mo ring mag-perform. Pero more than the loss, we are looking at the improvement sa lahat ng mga players din sa team namin.”
Valdez, who averaged 23.12 points in their first eight outings, finished with only two points.
The 23-year-old spiker came in late in the second set with Creamline ahead, 19-17, as substitute for middle Coleen Bravo. Obviously cold after riding the bench the whole first set, Valdez sent her first service wide right that gave the Water Defenders enough window to spark a run and steal the second frame.
During the course of the match, head coach Tai Bundit even moved Valdez at middle position.
“Very new also rin. Hindi naman ako usually pinapasok for receive and defense rin but it was a good experience also for me,” said Valdez, who suited up for 3BB Nakornnont in the Thai League early this year. “Sa Thailand noon pinapasok din ako ng biglaan.”
Creamline dropped its seconmd straight match and slid back to 3-6 win-loss slate. The Cool Smashers will play in the round robin quarters where the last two semis slots are at stake.
The Cool Smashers will take on Perlas on Thursday to end the preliminary round.
“More than the win kailangan naming maglaro as a team,” she said. “Kailangan naming ma-correct lahat ng mga mistakes and kailangan naming makuha ang click sa latter part of the game to finish strong also.”
