HD Spikers clinch semifinals second seed

Cignal closed the elimination round with a 4-1 win-loss slate and occupied the no. 2 seat in the best-of-three semifinals.
Mark Alfafara powered Cignal to a 25-14, 17-25, 25-19, 25-21, win over Sta. Elena to clinch the no. 2 semifinals seed in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference men’s division Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The former University Sto. Tomas star and member of the national pool uncorked 19 points coming off 13 attacks, three kill blocks and three aces for the HD Spikers, who closed the elimination round with a 4-1 win-loss record.
Cignal tied idle Philippine Air Force but the Jet Spikers occupied the top seed in the best-of-three semifinals series because of a superior tiebreak.
Peter Torres had 12 markers, Lorenzo Capate got 11 while setter Vince Mangulabnan dished out 31 excellent sets in the HD Spikers’ 52 attack points.
The two squads will meet in the semis starting Saturday.
“We all know that our game versus Sta. Elena is virtually no-bearing eh. But the sa classification we are no. 2 now. So what’s important for us is our momentum and second I told my players that every game should be an improvement on our previous game,” said Cignal head coach Oliver Almadro. “Yun ang hinahabol ko. This game is a learning game for us."
The Wrecking Balls dropped to no. 3 spot with a 3-2 slate. Edward Camposano and skipper Berlin Paglinawan scored 14 points each for Sta. Elena.
Air Force will face in the semis the playoff survivor between Philippine Army and Instituto Estetico Manila on Thursday.
