Pocari Sweat fights for the third semifinals berth against Perlas.
Pocari Sweat shoots for the third semifinals seat Thursday when the Lady Warriors square off with Perlas in the last play date of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference round robin quarterfinals at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Unbeaten in two outings, Pocari Sweat will formally join BaliPure and the Power Smashers in the next round with another victory in their 6:00 p.m. battle with the same squad that they defeated twice in the prelims. The match will air via livestream.
Behind American import Michelle Strizak’s 30 points and Myla Pablo’ 12 markers, the Lady Warriors turned back Creamline, 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 15-11, Tueday to inch closer to a semis spot.
Pocari Sweat needs to win this match to avoid complications in case of a three-way tie at 2-1 between them, Perlas and the Cool Smashers if Creamline edges Philippine Air Force in their quarters pairing.
And the Lady Warriors have been unlucky when tiebreakers are needed to decide which teams will advance in the semis. Pocari Sweat could’ve advanced outright in the semifinals but after closing the prelims with a 6-4 card tied with the Power Smashers, the latter took the no. 2 spot because of a higher tiebreak (set ratio).
“’Yun nga eh, delikado pa nga kami. Doon kami natalo (sa unang semis spots), sa quotient lang,” said head coach Rommel Abella, whose squad is still hoping to receive the International Transfer Certificate of replacement American import Krystal Rivers for added firepower.
The Spikers are tied with the Cool Smashers with 1-1 slates and are coming off a 24-26, 25-15, 26-28, 25-20, 15-8, win over Philippine Air Force last Tuesday behind the 30 points of Brazilian import Rupia Inck and 15 markers of Kathy Bersola.
Perlas will get an easy route to the semifinals if it wins against Pocari Sweat and Creamline loses to the Jet Spikers.
In case of a three-way tie at 1-2 card if the Spikers fall victim to the Lady Warriors and Air Force defeats Creamline, the team with the highest tiebreak will advance in the semis.
In men’s play, Philippine Army and Instituto Estetico Manila battle for the last semis slot in their 1:00 p.m. tussle.
Air Force, Cignal and Sta. Elena occupied the first three semis seats.
