Jet Spikers, HD Spikers look to draw semis first blood
Second seed Cignal seeks to connect an opening day win against Sta. Elena in the best-of-three semifinals.

Philippine Air Force and Cignal look to rekindle their storied rivalry as they face separate foes Saturday in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference men’s division best-of-three semifinals series opener at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Top seed Jet Spikers square off with Philippine Army at 10:00 a.m. in the curtain-raiser followed by the 1:00 p.m. tussle between no. 2 HD Spikers and Sta. Elena. Both matches will air via livestream.

Air Force and Cignal, which crossed paths four straight times in the championship round of Spikers’ Turf, closed the elimination round with identical 4-1 win-loss slates but the Jet Spikers occupied the no. 1 spot by virtue of a higher tiebreak.

Air Force hopes to ride the crest of its four-game winning streak to draw first blood against a team the Jet Spikers beat in straight sets in the elims.

The Troopers claimed the last semifinals seat after booting out Instituto Estetico Manila, 25-16, 21-25, 25-15, 25-23, last Thursday in their playoff after both squad closed the elims with 2-3 cards.

Ranran Abdilla, Fauzi Ismail, Jeffey Malabanan and Bryan Bagunas will carry the fight for Air Force while Army will bank on Benjaylo Labide, Romnick Rico, Lemuel Arbasto and Jayve Sumagaysay.

Meanwhile, former Ateneo de Manila star Ysay Marasigan, Lorenzo Capate, Peter Torres, Bonjomar Castel and top setter Vince Mangulabnan will try to power Cignal to another victory over the Wrecking Balls.

Cignal defeated Sta. Elena, 25-14, 17-25, 25-19, 25-21, last Tuesday at the close the elims.

Edward Camposano, Berlin Paglinawan, Ace Mandani and Kurt Rosete will spearhead the Wrecking Balls.

Game 2 is on Tuesday and if necessary, Game 3 is on Thursday.
