Philippine Air Force kept its championship berth bid alive after sweeping Philippine Army in Game 2 of the best-of-three semifinals series.
Philippine Air Force and Cignal kept their Finals hopes alive after forcing a decider in their respective Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference best-of-three semifinals series Tuesday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
With their backs against the wall, the HD Spikers pummeled Sta. Elena into submission with an emphatic, 25-17, 25-19, 25-22, win to tie their series to 1-1.
Lorenzo Capate gave an all-around offensive performance with nine kills, four kill blocks and a pair of aces for 15 points to lead Cignal’s bounce back from a four-set setback in the series opener last Saturday.
“What I told my player is to believe that they can do it (win Game 2). Unang-una it’s not about the skills naman eh, it’s about the mindset,” said HD Spikers head coach Oliver Almadro, whose squad can clinch a best-of-three Finals berth with another win on Thursday.
Skipper Ysay Marasigan and Mark Alfafara chipped in nine markers each for the HD Spikers, who had three straight Finals stints in the Spikers Turf.
“Nag-step up ang mga leaders ko na sina Lorenzo Capate, YTsay Marasigan and yung libero (Sandy Montero) ko nag-deliver ng maayos,” said Almadro, the architect of Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles’ three-peat in the UAAP. “Si Mark Alfafara naging consistent. I’m proud na ipinakita nila yung right character and right attitude towards the game.”
The top seed Jet Spikers also saved their campaign with a straight sets victory over Philippine Army, 25-17, 25-18, 25-20, to force Game 3.
Fauzi Ismail scored 13 points while Bryan Bagunas and Edwin Tolentino scored 10 and nine markers, respectively, for Air Force, which lost the series opener in four sets.
Lemuel Arbasto had 12 points for the Troopers while Mark Enciso led the Wrecking Balls with 10.
The Finals series starts Saturday.
The semis losers will play in a best-of-three battle for third.
