Lady Warriors set up Finals duel with Water Defenders

Pocari Sweat set up a Finals showdown against BaliPure after the Lady Warriors swept the Power Smashers, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21, Thursday in the best-of-three semifinals series decider of the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

American import Michelle Strizak and Myla Pablo led Pocari Sweat’s sizzling performance to secure the last championship berth.

The best-of-three Finals starts Saturday.

Strizak had 19 points anchored on 16 attacks while Pablo hammered 14 kills in her 17-point outing for the Lady Warriors, who received an early good news during the second set when replacement import Krystal Rivers received her International Transfer Certificate or clearance to play through Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc.

“Thank God na Finals-bound na naman kami,” said Pocari Sweat coach Rommel Abella, who steered his team to its third straight Finals appearance after winning it all in the V-League’s Open and Reinforced conferences last year. “Hats off namin sa ladies namin kanina, they played very well. Sabi nga ni Gy (Sy), we played with hearts ng champions.”

Rivers, an American replacement import for injured Bosnian guest player Edina Selimovic (right hamstring tear), received a letter from FIVB giving her the greenlight to suit up for the Lady Warriors midway in the second set. She was in uniform but decided not to see action.

The Lady Warriors had 39 attacks compared to 31 of the Power Smashers and scored eight kill blocks with seven more coming from the service line.

Pocari Sweat took Game 1 in a five-set decision, 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 22-25, 15-12, before dropping their second meeting last Tuesday in five sets, 26-24, 25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 13-15.

Thai Hyapa Amporn led the Power Smashers with 15 points while compatriot Kannika Tipachot had 11.

The Power Smashers will face Creamline in a best-of-three battle for third.
