Power Smashers, Cool Smashers begin battle for third series
Alyssa Valdez will try to give Creamline at least a third place finish in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference.

Semifinals losers Creamline and Power Smashers open their clash for a podium finish Saturday in Game 1 of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference best-of-three battle for third series at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

After falling short in their respective bids to advance to the Finals, the Cool Smashers and Power Smashers try to salvage some pride in the consolation prize showdown.

The series opener starts at 4:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.

Despite all the efforts of local superstar Alyssa Valdez and Thai import Kattika Kaewpin to carry the fight for Creamline, the Cool Smashers were overpowered by BaliPure, 18-25, 13-25, 16-25, Thursday in the decider of their best-of-three semifinals.

Creamline dropped their semis opener in four sets but was able to force a decider after five-set escape in Game 2.

Aside from Valdez and Kaewpin, the Cool Smashers will also lean on American reinforcement Laura Schaudt, Jema Galanza and Pau Soriano to defeat the Power Smashers.

It will be a tough task for Creamline after suffering two five-set defeats at the hands of the Power Smashers in their preliminary round meetings.

The Power Smashers absorbed a painful 19-25, 22-25, 21-25, setback against Pocari Sweat in their semis series do-or-die game last Thursday.

Just like the Cool Smashers, the Nes Pamilar-mentored squad bowed down against the Lady Warriors in five sets in their series opener before pulling off an equalizer in Game 2.

The Power Smashers hope to continue their mastery Creamline behind Thai imports Hyapa Amporn and Kannika Tipachot with the help of local hitters Jovielyn Prado, Dimdim Pacres, Regine Arocha and Andrea Marzan.

Game 2 is on Tuesday while Game 3, if needed, is on Thursday.

In case the Finals series between Pocari Sweat and BaliPure ends in two games while the battle for third gets tied a 1-1, the bronze medal winner will be decided via tiebreak.
