Pocari Sweat assigns De Guzman as head coach, promotes Abella
Pocari Sweat assigned Rico De Guzman (left) as new head coach and Babes Castillo (right) as lead deputy.
Rico De Guzman will be calling the shots for Pocari Sweat in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference that will start on July 1.
The Lady Warriors management announced the change Wednesday.
Pocari Sweat team manager Atty. Ken Mirasol, who replaced resigned team official Atty. Eric Anthony Ty, said that De Guzman will take the post held by Rommel Abella, who steered Pocari Sweat to three straight titles including the inaugural PVL Reinforced Conference crown recently.
Abella, who gave the franchise its first two titles last year in the V-League Open and Reinforced conferences, was elevated as the team’s director for player development.
The Lady Warriors promoted National University coach Babes Castillo as lead deputy of De Guzman, former head coach of Philippine Army, while the club is looking to bring back Parley Tupaz as part of its coaching staff according to Mirasol.
Pocari Sweat will try to annex its fourth title in a row behind top hitter Myla Pablo, the PVL Reinforced Conference Finals MVP, Elaine Kasilag, setter Gyzelle Sy and veteran libero Melissa Gohing.
Aside from the Lady Warriors, the other teams vying for the crown in the all-Filipino contest are BaliPure, Creamline, Philippine Air Force, Power Smashers, Perlas and new squads Hapee and Akari.
