Philippine Air Force defeated Banko-Perlas to start their PVL Open Conference campaign on the right foot.
Philippine Air Force took advantage of an undermanned Banko-Perlas side to join Creamline in the opening day winners’ list Saturday night in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference.
The Jet Spikers demolished the Spikers, 25-23, 9-25, 25-20, 25-20, to start their campaign on a high note at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Iari Yongco showed the way for Air Force with 15 points anchored on 13 attacks and a pair of kill blocks.
Jocemer Tapic and May Ann Pantino scored 14 and 11 markers, respectively, for the Jet Spikers, who survived an error-filled outing that saw them throw away 43 points of errors.
Air Force head coach Jasper Jimenez capitalized on Banko-Perlas missing some of its key players. Top hitter Dzi Gervacio skipped the tournament to study abroad while Kathy Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon were on vacation after graduating from University of the Philippines.
“Timing lang na wala ang ace player nila na sina Gervacio at Bersola so naging advantage sa game namin yun,” he said.
Sasa Devanadera and Amanda Villanueva finished with nine points each for the Spikers, who fell to 0-1 tied with Adamson University.
Skipper Sue Roces, Ella De Jesus and Amy Ahomiro each registered with seven markers.
