Lady Warriors, Lady Maroons clash for opening day win
All eyes are set on Myla Pablo as she tries to lead Pocari Sweat to another crown.

Looking to annex a fourth straight title, powerhouse team Pocari Sweat gets an early acid test as the Lady Warriors square off with University of the Philippines on Sunday in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The 4:00 p.m. tussle that will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream features a seasoned Pocari Sweat side eyeing a good start in their quest for glory against a young and rebuilding Lady Maroons crew.

Newly-appointed Lady Warriors head coach Rico De Guzman, who replaced promoted Rommel Abella, stressed the importance of starting their campaign on a high note especially with a short round robin elimination format where the top four teams will advance in the semis.

“Ito ngayon pini-prepare ko ang sarili ko sa unang laro namin. Galing sa isang linggong bakasyon to and isang linggo lang ang training naming,”said De Guzman, who is looking to steer the Pocari Sweat to another top podium finish after ruling the Reinforced Conference a few weeks back. “Sa unang mga games namin kailangan kami ang mangingibabaw.”

The Lady Warriors, who took the V-League Open and Reinforced Conference titles last year, will parade an intact championship core with Myla Pablo, Cai Nepumoceno, Elaine Kasilag, Desiree Dadang, Gyzelle Sy and libero Mel Gohing tipped to once again drive Pocari Sweat to Victory Lane.

UP, meanwhile, is looking to give its new lineup a run after the departure of veterans Kathy Bersola, Nicole Tiamzon and libero Pia Gaiser.

Leading the State University squad are incoming third year players Diana Carlos and Isa Molde while Justine Dorog will return as an open hitter after being converted as a libero last UAAP season. Ayel Estranero, the Lady Maroons’ setter in the last UAAP tournament, will return as a libero.

Also seeing action for UP are Mae Basarte, Marist Layug, Jessma Ramos, Alesha Gannaban, Rose Cailing, Vina Alinas and Caryl Sandoval while late inclusions in the roster are Roselyn Rosier, Cynthia Escutin and Iola Mia Pablo.
