Water Defenders outlast Power Smashers
Grethcel Soltones powered BaliPure past the Power Smashers.

BaliPure clawed its way out of a 1-2 match deficit to complete a come-from-behind, 25-15, 22-25, 20-25, 25-19, 15-6, win against the Power Smashers in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference Sunday night at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Reinforced Conference runner-up Water Defenders banked on the solid game of top hitter Grethcel Soltones especially in the fifth set where BaliPure unleashed a scorching closing barrage capped by a Jerrili Malabanan ace to escape with the victory.

But head coach Roger Gorayeb was far from satisfied with his team's performance, stressing his team's lack of focus especially after taking the opening set in a dominating fashion.

“Parang masyado silang masaya, OK masaya, pero parang nawala na sila sa focus tapos nag-iba na 'yung timpla ng itsura nila noong naging dikitan na,” said Gorayeb. “Sabi ko hindi pwedeng ganoon, lumabas ang pagkabata ng character nila.”

“Pero ang panalo ay panalo, we have to learn from it,” he added.

Soltones finished with 22 points, including 22 off attacks, and also contributed on defense with 23 excellent receptions and 13 digs for BaliPure. Risa Sato scored 18, Malabanan had 16 markers with four coming off the service line while Aiko Urdas chipped in with 15.

Setter Jasmine Nabor dished out 57 excellent sets for the Water Defenders. She had eight points, five coming off aces for BaliPure, which had 14 service winners.

Protecting a slim 8-6 lead, the Water Defenders scored seven straight points to clinch the win and join other early winners Philippine Air Force, Creamline and four-peat-seeking Pocari Sweat.

Opposite hitter Dimdim Pacres had 13 points while Regine Arocha and Alexandra Tan registered 12 and 10 markers, respectively, for the Power Smashers.
