Wrecking Balls, HD Spikers join opening day winners' list

Sta. Elena and repeat-seeking Cignal demolished their respective rivals and joined two other opening day winners Sunday in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference men’s division at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Berlin Palinawan waxed hot, leading the Wrecking Balls to an easy 25-16, 25-20, 25-21, dismantling of Instituto Estetico Manila.
The National University standout dropped 20 points with 19 coming off kills while Isaah Arda chipped in 10 markers for Sta. Elena. Nico Ramirez facilitated the Wrecking Balls’ fluid offensive flow, dishing out 32 excellent sets in Sta. Elena’s 45 attack points.
The Wrecking Balls joined other early winners Philippine Air Force, newcomer Mega Builders and reigning Reinforced Conference champions HD Spikers.
Cignal defeated Café Lupe in an emphatic fashion, 25-19, 25-18, 25-13, behind a balanced offensive performance orchestrated by top playmaker Vince Mangulabnan.
The HD Spikers setter tallied 21 excellent set as he got most of his teammates involved of offense.
Peter Torres scored 10 points, Lorenzo Capate got nine while Mark Alfafara and Rex Intal combined for 15 markers for Cignal.
Greg Dolor and Kurl Rosete got 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Phoenix Volley Masters while John Millete was the lone Sunrisers player in double digits with 12 markers.
