HD Spikers connect second straight win for share of early lead

National team star Mark Alfafara showed the way for Cignal as the HD Spikers took a share of the lead with a 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, win against Sta. Elena in the men’s division of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The University of Sto. Tomas product dropped 18 points, all from thunderous attacks, to deliver Cignal’s second win in as many outings for a three-way tie with Philippine Air Force and Mega Builders at the top.
Skipper Ysay Marasigan added 17 points and had eight digs while Lorenzo Capate finished with 16 markers and 10 excellent receptions for the Reinforced Conference champions. Vince Mangulabnan dished out 40 excellent sets in for Cignal, which will a tougher test on Wednesday against Army.
The Wrecking Balls absorbed its second straight defeat to slide to 1-2 slate.
Team captain Berlin Paglinawan had 16 points, Joven Caaganakan got 12 while Israel Encina and Isaah Arda scored 13 and 12 markers, respectively, for Sta. Elena.
Meanwhile, Instituto Estetico Manila bounced back from an opening day loss at the expense of struggling Café Lupe, 25-18, 27-25, 25-19, in the second game.
Mark Enciso and Kurl Rosete scored 12 points each to lead the Phoenix Volley Masters to 1-1c card. Rudy Gatdula added 10 markers as IEM added more woes to the Sunrisers.
Café Lupe came up short for the third straight game in as many outings to remain at the cellar.
Carlo Sebastian finished with nine points while Jasper Adorador had seven for the Sunrisers, who are yet to win a set in the tournament.
