Risa Sato of BaliPure penetrates an attack through the defense of Aiesha Gannaban of University of the Philippines.
BaliPure bounced back mightily from a painful setback the last time out with a cakewalk, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23, demolition of University of the Philippines Saturday in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Grethcel Soltones, Aiko Urdas and Risa Sato brought the Water Defenders back in the win column after absorbing a four-set defeat at the hands of Creamline last Wednesday for a 2-1 win-loss record.
The Lady Maroons gave BaliPure a scare in the third set, overhauling a 19-22 deficit to take a 23-22 lead from an attack by Isa Molde. Jerrili Malabanan answered with an off the block kill to tie the set at 23.
Sato put the Water Defenders at match point with a quick attack before sealing the contest with a block kill.
Soltones finished with 18 points with 16 coming off spikes while Urdas and Sato scored 13 points each for BaliPure, which will take on Philippine Air Force next after a one-week break. Malabanan had 10.
Water Defenders playmaker Jasmine Nabor had 40 excellent sets out of thee 44 attack points unleashed by BaliPure.
But Water Defenders coach Roger Gorayeb was far from satisfied with his team’s performance.
“Ngayon naman three sets lang pero parang nawawala yung aggressiveness ng mga bata,” he said. “Nakikita ko na kung ano ang nilalaro ng kalaban ganoon din sila. Kung mabagal ang kalaban, mabagal din sila.”
“Gusto ko kasi agresibo palagi, mapaopensa o depensa,” Gorayeb added. “Pero hindi naman malaking problema yan. Parang wakeup call lang (ang kailangan).”
Isa Molde had 22 points coming from 19 attacks and three kill blocks while adding eight excellent receptions in a lost cause for UP, which dropped its second straight game in as many outings.
Diana Carlos registered 18 markers with six excellent receptions for the Lady Maroons.
