Cool Smashers seek third straight win, share of lead
Alyssa Valdez will try to lead Creamline to another victory.

Superstar Alyssa Valdez wants to make the most out of her remaining couple of games with Creamline before she joins the national team in its Japan training.

Valdez plays her first of last two elimination round matches as the Cool Smashers look to take a share of the lead on Sunday against Philippine Air Force in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Game time is at 6:30 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166 and via livestream.

Creamline is at second spot with 2-0 win-loss record behind league-leading Pocari Sweat (3-0).

Valdez starred for the Cool Smashers’ conquest of BaliPure, 25-20, 28-30, 25-19, 31-29, last Wednesday. The Reinforced Conference Most Valuable Player dropped 37 points, 34 coming off attacks, against the Water Defenders.

Valdez, who is averaging 27.5 points per game, will be available to play for Creamline until July 15 against the Lady Warriors. She will skip the rest of the elimination round as the national team will train in Japan from July 17 to August 2 as part of its preparation for the AVC Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship and Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia next month.

“Ako honestly I’m happy na nakakatulong ako sa team but definitely malalim din talaga ang bench and sa training and practice naman tinututukan ng mga coaches ‘yung mga possibilities na situations na mangyayari every game,” she said.

Valdez will have Rosemarie Vargas, Pau Soriano and Rizza Mandapat as support on offense with top setter Jia Morado, who dished out 71 excellent sets the last time out, orchestrating their attacks.

The Jet Spikers are fresh from a long break after their opening day, 25-23, 9-25, 25-20, 25-20, win over BanKo-Perlas a week ago.

Iari Yongco, who had 15 points against the Spikers, May Ann Pantino, Joy Cases Jocemer Tapic, setter Wendy Semana and Angel Antipuesto are tipped to carry the fight for Air Force while returnees Judy Anne Caballejo and Dell Palomata are expected to step up after a dry first game outing.
