Spikers survive Lady Falcons scare, end two-game slide
Nicole Tiamzon of BanKo-Perlas taps the ball over the block of Adamson's Eli Soyud and Rizza Cruz.

BanKo-Perlas weathered a furious comeback attempt by Adamson University to escape with a 25-18, 25-16, 21-25, 25-21, win Sunday in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Spikers paraded a complete lineup with Kathy Bersola seeing action for the first time after skipping their first two outings as BanKo-Perlas ended a two-game slide for a 1-2 win-loss record.

Amanda Villanueva torched her former college team while Nicole Tiamzon, Bersola, Suzanne Roces and Amy Ahomiro provided the support for the Spikers.

Tiamzon pounded 10 attacks, had three aces and a kill block for 14 points, Bersola, who was on vacation during their BanKo-Perlas' first two games, dropped 13 while Villanueva and Ahomiro scored 12 and 10 markers, respectively.

Charrisse Ancheta tallied 34 excellent sets in the Spikers' 43 attack points.

“Siyempre malaking bagay siya kasi seven games lang and we already lost two. So kumbaga, ideally ‘yun na yung ceiling sa talo for us,” said Bersola. “So we really wanted to win this, and sana sa upcoming games, makuha ulit namin.”

Down, 7-13, in the fourth set, the Spikers patiently chopped down their deficit to take a 19-15 lead. The Lady Falcons proved to be a hard customer to put away as Adamson took a 21-20 advantage.

But BanKo-Perlas uncorked five straight points capped by a Bersola attack to claim the match.

The Spikers looked like they were heading to an early win after dominating the Lady Falcons in the first two sets before Adamson got a second win to extend the match.

The Lady Falcons overhauled an 11-16 deficit in the third set with a blinding six straight points capped by an off the block hit by Galanza to take the helm, 17-16. BanKo-Perlas equalized in the next play before Adamson unleashed another barrage of points to pull away, 24-20.

The Spikers saved a set point but Roces overshot her attack to surrender the frame to the Lady Falcons.

“I think nawala ‘yung ingay and then ‘yung fun sa loob. Kasi nu’ng first two sets, sobrang saya at sobrang ingay naming,” said Bersola. “Pagdating noong third, medyo lumamang sila, medyo naging tahimik. Noong third and fourth, medyo mababa ‘yung energy.”

Adamson dropped to 0-2 card.

Jema Galanza registered 18 points anchored on 17 attacks while Eli Soyud finished with nine markers for the Lady Falcons. Guest player Rizza Cruz was limited to only two points in two sets of action while high school playmaker Louie Romero dished out 30 excellent with five points.
