Volley Bolts take solo lead, Troopers shoot down Jet Spikers

Mega Builders climbed to solo lead after a walk in the park crushing of Gamboa Coffee, 25-23, 25-11, 25-16, Sunday in the men’s division of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Kim Malabunga and Fauzi Ismail spearheaded the 70-minute drubbing of the Volley Bolts over the Spikers for their third win in as many outings.
Malabunga hammered seven kills and had five kill blocks for 12 points while Ismail scored 10 markers anchored on seven attacks for Mega Builders, which will take on Instituto Estetico Manila on Saturday.
The Spikers absorbed its second loss in as many games. Philip Bagalay scored eight to lead Gamboa Coffee, which gave away 28 points off errors.
Meanwhile, Philippine Army bounced back from its opening day setback as the Troopers outdueled Philippine Air Force, 25-20, 23-25, 17-25, 25-22, 16-14, in an early rematch of their semifinals duel in the Reinforced Conference.
The Troopers improved to 1-1 slate tied with IEM.
Benjaylo Labide had 20 points, 16 off spikes, while Romnick Rico and Manuel Medina finished with 11 markers each for the Troopers, who opened their campaign with a sorry five-set loss to the Volley Bolts.
The Jet Spikers had their two-game winning streak snapped.
National team member Ranran Abdilla had 17 points, Edwin Tolentino posted 16 points while Rudolfo Labrador and Jeffrey Malabanan registered 12 and 10 markers, respectively, for Air Force.
