Chiara Permentilla tallied 24 points in Adamson University's stunning win over the Power Smashers.
Adamson University scored a huge upset against the Power Smashers, 25-20, 24-26, 25-19, 25-22, to end a two-game slide and barge into the win column Wednesday in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Falcons showed great team effort and energy to stave off the comeback attempt of the Power Smashers in the fourth set and walked away with their first win in three outings tied with BanKo-Perlas.
Jema Galanza played her usual game but newcomer Chiarra Permentilla was the biggest revelation when she spearheaded Adamson’s offense with 24 big points.
The 5-foot-8 outside hitter, a transferee from De La Salle-Lipa, pounded 19 attacks with three aces and a pair of kill blocks to highlight her breakout game. Galaza had 17 markers with all but one coming off attacks while adding 29 digs and 12 excellent receptions for Adamson, which dropped its first two games in four sets against Creamline and BanKo-Perlas.
“I think I really stressed to them today that the team that’s gonna win today is the team that is gonna be more consistent,” said Lady Falcons coach Airess Padda. “I think that's been a really big problem for us and we knew that we were going up against a team that’s similar to us, not in skills but just with the inexperience.”
I know most of those girls are NCAA college girls, and they also got (Dimdim) Pacres from UST. She would be like equivalent to Jema, so I thought we were evenly matched in that area,” she added. “But I do know that they make a lot of errors, just like us. So I just told them, tutok lang. That's what they had to do today.”
The Power Smashers threatened to drag the match into a fifth set after overhauling a 5-11 deficit in the frame with a scorching 10-2 rally to take a 15-13 lead.
Adamson fought back to move at match point, 24-20, but the Power Smashers saved a pair of match points before Permentilla penetrated the two-man block with a thunderous kill to ice the victory.
The Power Smashers dropped to a 0-3 card to tie the University of the Philippines.
Regine Arocha scored 13 points, Reinforced Conference Best Opposite Hitter Pacres had 11 while Anne Esguerra finished with 10 for the Power Smashers.
