Pocari Sweat ace Myla Pablo and the Lady Warriors didn’t know what hit them Saturday when Creamline dealt them their first loss in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Open Conference.
The Lady Warriors were easily submitted in the opening set, recovered in the second but found the Cool Smashers too much in the next two frames to bow down, 15-25, 25-17, 19-25, 19-25, Saturday to absorb their first defeat in four games.
Alyssa Valdez did most of the damage as the Creamline ace hitter tallied 30 points to put the Cool Smashers at solo lead with 4-0 win-loss record.
“Siguro noong first set talaga, ewan ko kung anong nangyari. Grabe rin ang Creamline talaga,” said Pablo, who scored 26 points.
Pocari Sweat got buried, 8-17, in the opening frame and had no answer to Valdez and the superb playmaking of setter Jia Morado, who distributed the ball so well that the Lady Warriors were left guessing where to thow their defense.
“Nagulat din kami noong first set parang na-stuck kami. Wala kaming na-receive. Parang blangko kami noong first set,” Pablo admitted.
Pocari Sweat was able to tie the match at one set apiece before losing steam.
“Nu’ng second set, um-OK na kami sa second set nakaka-receive na kami, nakakdepensa na kami and nakaka-play na ng maayos si Gyzelle (Sy). Noong third and fourth set nakulangan na talaga kami,” Pablo said.
She pointed out their weakness at the net, putting a gaping hole that Valdez and the rest of the Cool Smashers took advantage on.
Pocari Sweat had five kill blocks, three less of Creamline’s total and allowed the Cool Smashers to score 54 attacks and land nine service winners.
“Wala kaming blocking. Wala kami (depensa) sa gitna kaya nahihirapan kami sa likod. Mahirap magbasa kasi nga ‘yung gitna butas so hindi namin alam kung saan pupuwesto. Kung down the line ba?” said Pablo. “So tuwing nagda-down the line kami, gitna ang palo. Nahihirapan kami sa blockings talaga. Alam din naman namin na nagkulang kami ngayon.”
Pablo and the Lady Warriors don’t want to dwell on their setback. They are now looking to bounce back on Sunday against Adamson University.
“Ito ang kinukuha naming win pero hindi namin nakuha. Back to zero na naman kami,” she said. “Paghihirapan namin ulit sa training na naman ng one week. Kung ano ang mali namin sa game na ‘to kailangan trabahuhin namin this coming game against Adamson.”
