Power Smashers end three-game slide
Regine Arocha of the Power Smashers blocks the attack of BanKo-Perlas' Kathy Bersola.

With their Final Four hopes on the line, the Power Smashers arrested a three-game slide with a morale-boosting 25-22, 16-25, 26-24, 23-25, 15-12, win over BanKo-Perlas in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Open Conference Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Jovielyn Prado and Regine Arocha teamed up on offense to deliver the Power Smashers’s first win in four games to tie their victim in the standing.

The Arellano University duo did most of the damage with a combined 36 attack points. Prado finished with 22 points while Arocha had 18 including 17 coming off spikes for the Power Smashers, who recovered from a four-set upset against Adamson University.

But head coach Nes Pamilar still saw some things that the Power Smashers need to improve on going forward.

“Nag-aasahan sila masyado. Sabi ko nga kung hindi tayo magtutulong-tulong malabo tayong umabot kung gusto man nating makarating ng Final Four ulit,” he said.

The Power Smashers were able to build a 13-10 separation in the fifth set after a see-saw battle in the early going of the frame. A four-touch violation was called against the Power Smashers in the next play but Ella De Jesus overshot her attack that put the Power Smashers at match point, 14-11.

De Jesus kept the BanKo-Perlas alive, scoring on a hit but Spikers middle Amy Ahomiro sent the ball long on a quick attack attempt to surrender the battle.

Nicole Tiamzon led BanKo-Perlas with 22 points, De Jesus got 20 while Suzanne Roces and Kathy Bersola registered 15 and 13 points, respectively.
