BanKo started strong on Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Centre only to find themselves in a two-set hole.
Kathy Bersola was not going to let them go down without a fight, however.
On the back of a career-game by their middle hitter, the Perlas Spikers pulled out an even stronger finish and pulled out a come-from-behind victory versus BaliPure, 24-26, 13-25, 25-13, 25-22, and 15-11 to remain in contention in the 2017 Premier Volleyball League Open Conference.
Bersola dropped 24 big points, by far the best output in her career, as well as one of the two points that completed her team’s comeback. “Sobrang binigyan kasi nila ako ng tiwala kaya ni-try ko lang talaga best ko. Gusto ko lang talaga manalo,” she said post-game.
BanKo blitzed its opponents, 8-1, to open the game, but was unable to sustain the momentum and surrendered the first two sets.
With their campaign on the line, team captain Sue Roces rallied her troops. “Pinag-usapan namin na this would probably leave us out of the semis if we lost. Kaya kailangan talaga namin mag-show ng pride,” Bersola shared.
Indeed, Bersola and Nicole Tiamzon came alive in the third set and carried the Perlas Spikers back from the dead, tying the two teams at two sets apiece.
In the fifth and final set, BanKo again got out to a 6-2 start, but then had the Water Defenders still threatening at 11-13.
It was at that point that Bersola and Ella De Jesus went back-to-back to finalize their team’s first winning streak in the tournament.
Tiamzon wound up with 20 points while De Jesus chipped in 10 markers of her own.
Now standing at 3-3, the Perlas Spikers have barged into the playoff picture. Next up for them, however, is still undefeated Creamline.
Bersola knows full well they will be in another must-win situation then. “That’s a very important game for us kasi if we win that, malaki yung chance na makapasok ng semis. Yun naman talaga yung goal namin,” she expressed.
For BaliPure, Grethcel Soltones topped the scoring column with 20 points.
Unable to wrap up their two-set lead early on, however, they dropped to 2-3.
