Sta. Elena sets its eyes on moving closer to a semifinals seat.
Sta. Elena and Philippine Army try to keep their semifinals hopes alive against their respective opponents Wednesday in the men’s division of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Wrecking Balls face newcomer Gamboa Coffee at 10:00 a.m. followed by the match of the Troopers against the listless Café Lupe Sunrisers at 1:00 p.m. that will air via livestream.
Sta. Elena and Army are tied at fifth to sixth spots with 2-3 win-loss records and are still on the right track in the race for the last two semifinals spots.
Unbeaten Mega Builders (6-0) and Reinforced Conference champion Cignal (5-1) are through to the best-of-three semifinals.
Coming off a straight sets, 20-25, 20-25, 20-25, loss to sister-team Mega Builders, Sta. Elena hopes to get back on the win column and formally send the Spikers to an early vacation.
But it will be a tough task for the Wrecking Balls especially against a team riding the crest of a breakthrough 25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 27-25 win over the Sunrisers last Sunday.
Gamboa Coffee holds a 1-4 slate. A sweep of their last two games in straight or four sets coupled with will give them a slim chance to force a playoff.
But the Spikers’ chances are already out of their hands because they’ll need to pray hard for other teams still in contention for the semis berth lose games.
Philippine Army, on the other hand, is fresh from a five-set win over Instituto Estetico Manila, 25-23, 24-26, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11, last Sunday.
The also-ran Café Lupe is winless in five games.
