NOT YET THE END. Isa Molde and UP will be heading into their next battle with much-needed momentum.
While their campaign in the 2017 Premier Volleyball Open Conference didn’t go as planned, the University of the Philippines will nonetheless move forward with some sort of momentum.
Showing much-needed maturity, the Lady Maroons outlasted equally desperate Power Smashers in a five-set affair, 25-17, 21-25, 23-25, 25-19, and 15-11 on Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Just like their UAAP season, State U trudged through a rocky campaign and only had one win to show through the first six games.
Still, head coach Jerry Yee was very much satisfied with this conference-closing win. “Importante sa amin ‘to kasi siyempre, momentum yan going to the next conference,” he said.
UP easily took the first set before reverting to the dispirited play that caused them to struggle through the tournament. “May mga iffy moments na nag-aalangan pa rin tayo,” Yee explained.
Down two sets to one, however, Yee’s girls buckled down and forced a final frame to settle the score.
There, Carlos took charge and drilled three of her 23 points as the Lady Maroons’ 10-3 start eventually ended as a fifth-set win. “Siya yung pinu-push ko talaga and nagma-mature na siya,” the head coach said, nothing but happy with his captain.
Isa Molde also added 19 points, all but two coming from kills while Ayel Estranero chipped in five service aces and seven total points for UP.
Carlos and company finish this conference by barely escaping the bottom of the standings with a 2-5 record. “We would’ve wanted to win more games, but charge to experience na lang,” Yee expressed.
Below them in the leaderboard are the Power Smashers who wind up their campaign with a 1-6 standing.
Regine Arocha topped the scoring column for them with 18 points.
