Gorayeb sings Morado’s praises, sees Nabor being just as good

SETTING IT STRAIGHT.
BaliPure took care of business on Sunday and took away the fourth and final playoff berth in the 2017 Premier Volleyball League Open Conference.
Their prize for doing so? A best-of-three semifinal series against still undefeated Creamline.
Of course, head coach Roger Gorayeb was well aware they are the underdogs. Asked about the matchup, he answered, “Best effort kami nyan. Patapangan lang ng loob yan.”
The Water Defenders may have an even bigger problem on their hands as the Cool Smashers may be welcoming back Alyssa Valdez, who is wrapping up her duties for the national team, just in time for the playoffs.
Whether or not the two-time champion and three-time MVP in the UAAP will be there, however, Gorayeb said they will be nothing but prepared. “Ngayon naman, ‘di namin tinitignan yung Creamline na Alyssa lang kasi nung nandun naman siya dati, natalo namin sila,” he said.
In the previous conference, BaliPure got the better of Valdez-led Creamline in the semifinals that went the distance.
Unlike the previous conference, however, the Cool Smashers will now have Jia Morado setting the table for them.
And in Gorayeb’s eyes, Morado’s presence is perhaps the key factor in the series. As he put it, “Tao sa tao, match na match naman e. Magkakatalo lang kay Jia kasi sa decision-making niya.”
He then continued, “Iba kasi talaga mag-isip si Jia e.”
While they have a setter who is no slouch either, the Water Defenders’ mentor said Jasmine Nabor still has much to improve to come close to Morado’s level. “Si Jasmine, bata pa tapos second year pa lang sa setting. Marami pa talagang kailangang matutunan,” he said.
The good news is that Gorayeb believes Nabor is on the right track. “I think one more year pa and si Jasmine, magaling na,” he expressed.
Looking at the statistics, on Saturday at least, Nabor may be closer than Gorayeb thinks.
The BaliPure setter registered 40 excellent sets. For reference, Morado tallied 43 excellent sets in Creamline’s victory versus BanKo-Perlas.
