FOLLOW ME. Tots Carlos has come through thus far in her newfound role as leader.
University of the Philippines wound up the 2017 Premier Volleyball League with a much-needed win.
“We liked what we saw,” head coach Jerry Yee said, with a shade of a smile on his usually stoic face.
He was also quick to add, however, “Although may mga iffy moments moments na nag-aalangan and tentative pa rin tayo. So we have to improve on that.”
Indeed, the Lady Maroons easily took the first set before reverting to the spirited play that caused them to struggle through the tournament. “Bumibitaw kami pag dinidikitan. Kinakabahan kami kasi iilan lang din senior ko,” Yee said.
He then continued, “Medyo bata pa talaga yung team.”
Still, the mentor said he has never failed to remind his girls to just power through. “We always talk to the girls kasi ‘di na naman physical yan, mental yan. We always tell them na it’s alright na magkamali rather than not trying,” he shared.
The good news is time and again, there has been one player who has answered the call.
Team captain Tots Carlos has been the one constant as the top scorer in the stat sheet and the clear voice inside the huddle. “Siya yung pinu-push ko talaga and nagma-mature na siya. Malakas talaga katawan niya so hopefully, magtuloy-tuloy na,” Yee said.
Nonetheless, the skipper acknowledged that her newfound leadership role is far from easy. “Mahirap talaga lalo na, siyempre, pantay-pantay kami. Ka-batch ko lang lahat,” she said.
That has not stopped her from leading, especially by example, however. As she put it, “Dinadaan ko lang sa usap tapos binibigay ko lang lagi best ko para may gayahin naman sila.”
The even better news is that Carlos is only vowing to show much more maturity and leadership. “Siyempre, alam natin na kung mature yung leader mo, yung mga kasama, sasama and ganun din magiging pag-iisip. So ganun ang kailangan kong gawin,” she said.
