Cignal opens its semifinals series against Sta. Elena Saturday
Action in the men’s division of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Open Conference hits fever pitch as the best-of-three semifinals series begins Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
No. 2 seed Mega Builders takes on Philippine Air Force at 10:00 a.m. while the top seed Cignal HD Spikers square off with the Sta. Elena Wrecking Balls in their 1:00 p.m. pairing that will air via livestream.
Game 2 of the series is on Sunday. If needed, Game 3 is on Wednesday.
Reinforced Conference champion Cignal occupied the top spot after the elimination round via higher tiebreak after a tie with the Volley Bolt with 6-1 win-loss slate.
The HD Spikers will parade a complete lineup with the return of Mark Alfafara, Herschel Ramos and Bonjomar Castel from a two-game absence after joining the national team in a 13-day training camp in Suwon, South Korea.
Cignal is looking to make a repeat of its 25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, win over the Wrecking Balls in their elims meeting.
But it won’t be a walk in the park for the Oliver Almadro-mentored HD Spikers as Sta. Elena is riding on the crest of a three-game winning streak.
The Wrecking Balls punched the last semis ticket after sweeping Philippine Army, 25-17, 25-22, 29-27, last Wednesday in a playoff to set up a semis rematch against their Reinforced Conference tormentors.
Meanwhile, Bryan Bagunas will suit up for Mega Builders while Air Force star Alnakran Abdilla will also see action after skipping a couple of games with their respective clubs to fulfill their duty with the national team.
The two players were unavailable when Air Force snapped Mega Builders’ six-game winning streak in a 25-18, 25-20, 23-25, 26-28, 15-12 win last week.
