Gorayeb on Grethcel: ‘Parang yoyo, pag tinadyakan, babalik’
PARTNERS-IN-CRIME. Grethcel Soltones and head coach Roger Gorayeb are champions for the first time in two years.

Head coach Roger Gorayeb called it for Grethcel Soltones on Wednesday.

“Nung third set tapos hinahabol kami, sinabi ko, ‘Simple lang yan, pag dumating dito, i-drop mo,’” he told reporters after BaliPure got the better of Pocari Sweat and gained its first-ever championship.

He then continued, “Yung last point niya, ni-drop niya. Edi patay, edi tapos ang boksing.”

Indeed, with the Water Defenders clinging onto a 24-23 lead in the third, Soltones saw an opening just beside the line, sent the ball over the outstretched arms of both Siemens Dadang and Kai Nepomuceno, and scored the point that won the set.

Exactly as her mentor called it.

And so, right after scoring the point, the open hitter pointed to Gorayeb with a big, big smile. “Alam mo naman si Grethcel e, kahit sigawan ko, makikinig at makikinig sa akin yan,” the latter would later say.

One set later, the two were celebrating the championship.

Of course, their trust in each other only proved to be key in BaliPure’s breakthrough.

Trust that, apparently, nothing could break. “Si Grethcel, kahit tagain ko ‘to, ‘di naman lalayas sa tabi ko ‘to e,” the always jovial Gorayeb jokingly shared.

He then continued, still playing around, “Para ‘tong yoyo, pag tinadyakan ko palayo, bumabalik.”

The win comes on the heels of a couple of seasons of failed tries for NCAA championships with San Sebastian College-Recoletos.

However, Soltones made it clear that their win still doesn’t take away their sorry losses in two collegiate championship rounds. As she put it, “Iba naman pong usapan yung sa school sa rito. Siyempre, dito naman, kailangan na talaga yung maturity.”

Now she is a champion for the first time in two years, the three-time NCAA MVP will now turn her attention to studying as well as supporting her alma mater. Asked about what’s next for her, she answered, “Chill lang muna. Cheer (for San Sebastian in NCAA Basketball).”

She then continued, “Mag-aaral ako para matapos na ako.”
