FEU Lady Tamaraws: testing a new system
Marami kang babaguhin sa sistema at marami kang babaguhin sa practice na pwedeng maging mas competitive pa ang team -- FEU coach George Pascua on injecting a new system to the Lady Tamaraws

New Far Eastern University head coach George Pascua wants to use their participation in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference as a testing ground to gauge how well the Lady Tamaraws are adapting to his system.

“Hindi siya ganoon kadali pero hopefully makikita namin ang adjustment na dapat naming gawin dito sa PVL,” said Pascua, who replaced Shaq Delos Santos.

Much is expected from the team as they prepare for UAAP Season 80 and Pascua sees the tournament as a chance to build their momentum. Winning it all in the Collegiate Conference is a perfect start.

“Kailangan maabot namin ang expectations ng management, ng mga fans at mga players pero hindi ganoon kadali yun kasi process yun,” he said. “Marami kang babaguhin sa sistema at marami kang babaguhin sa practice na pwedeng maging mas competitive pa ang team.”

Pascua plans to fine-tune his squad and correct its lapses as the tournament progresses.

“So far mag-stick lang muna kami sa kulang ng team, ‘yung mga nakikita kong lapses so ‘yun muna ang ginagawan namin ng paraan and dito sa pagsali sa liga mo kasi makikita ‘yun eh. Kapag naglalaro ka competitively,” said the mentor. “Dapat ayusin ang receive, sa service at sa blocking. ‘Yun kasi ‘yung mga aspeto na nawawala yung consistency ng player.”

The former FEU men’s coach will take the rein of an almost intact team that finished in the top four of the UAAP.

Back to see action for the Lady Tams are top hitters Bernadeth Pons, Toni Rose Basas as well as Jerrili Malabanan and Gel Cayuna, who led BaliPure in winning the Open Conference title three weeks ago. FEU will also field former University of the East middle blocker Celine Domingo.

Pascua sees the tournament as an opportunity to measure their level of competitiveness as they are bracketed with UAAP foes Ateneoe De Manila and National University and NCAA teams Lyceum of the Philippines U, Jose Rizal University and San Sebastian College in Group A.

“Ang expectation ko rito kasi bilang pre-tournament namin bago ang UAAP, ‘yung adjustments namin makikita,” said Pascua. “Iba kasi ang training sa actual game, kasi doon namin makikita kung maa-apply ba ‘yung mga adjustments na ‘yun sa game.”
