Lyceum of the Philippines looks to gain experience in the PVL Collegiate Conference.
"Hindi naituturo ang experience." (Experience can't be taught)
This was the answer of Lyceum of the Philippines University head coach Emil Lontoc when asked by ABS-CBN Sports about the Lady Pirates’ goal in joining the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference.
“Ang target namin dyan ay mabigyan ng exposure ang mga bata,” said Lontoc. “Sa totoo lang ang mga bata kasi kulang sa exposure. Ang experience hindi mo kayang ituro.”
This will mark the return of LPU in the Sports Vision-organized volleyball league since its last participation in the defunct V-League back in 2011 and first since the Intramuros-based squad joined NCAA on the same year.
“First time namin na makasali na naman uli, before nakasali na kami pero matagal na ‘yun. Noong V-League pa ‘yun,” added the Lady Pirates coach. “Before tumitimbang kami doon pero since ng makapasok kami sa NCAA ang mga players namin tyinatyaga lang namin na ma-develop sa school pero this time sabi ko nga mas maganda na dito lalaban ang mga bata para makakuha kami ng experience.”
The multi-titled mentor wanted his young players to gain experience and confidence as part of their build up for the next NCAA season.
“Magandang exposure sa amin ito kasi dito namin makikita kung paano namin ihahanda ang team namin para sa NCAA,” said Lontoc, who honed the skills of former LPU standout and current Air Force star Joy Cases. “Sa NCAA kasi ang target namin is championship.”
LPU will be pitted against UAAP teams Ateneo de Manila University, Far Eastern University, National University and NCAA foes Jose Rizal University and San Sebastian College in Group A of the 12-team field.
Lontoc is banking on graduating player Cherilyn Sindayen, Rocelyn Hongria, Rainne Fabay, Bien Juanillo Cherry Rose Genova and Christine Miralles as the Lady Pirates gun for a spot in the Final Four.
“Intact halos. May nawala kaming isang open spiker pero compared sa team namin last year mas malakas ang team na ito,” said a very confident Lontoc, who has been with LPU for almost two decades.
“Masasabi ko na kahit paano ay may height din kami. Di kami lugi sa height kasi matataas ang mga players namin ngayon,” he added. “Pero ‘yung experience talaga ang hanap namin dito. At mabibigyan namin sila ng laban.”
