SSC-R: Wanted new Lady Beast
San Sebastian College head coach Roger Gorayeb is in search for the next Lady Stags leader and go-to-guy.

For half a decade, the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Lady Stags have been leaning on the shoulders of their most effective hitter and prolific scorer in Grethcel Soltones.

The Lady Beast churned in numbers both on offense and in defense.

A workhorse, a force to reckon with, a do-it-all ace player.

But SSC-R doesn’t have that luxury anymore after Soltones exhausted all her playing eligibility.

Head coach Roger Gorayeb’s mission now is to find a replacement for his most prized talent as they prepare for the next NCAA season.

He will have a chance to see which among his wards will step up to the challenge in the Lady Stags’ campaign in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference.

“Gusto kong makita nila ang self-reliance nila, na parang they should not play under the shadow of Grethcel,” said Gorayeb, who will still have Soltones as well as Katherine Villegas by his side as part of his coaching staff.

Magpursige sila. Yun ang gusto kong makita sa kanila.”

Gorayeb is managing his expectations with his young team in the season-ending conference.

All he wants is for his players to develop their confidence during the tournament and see where they will go from there.

SSC-R is in Group A together with powerhouse UAAP teams Ateneo de Manila University, National University and Far Eastern University and other NCAA squads Lyceum of the Philippines University and Jose Rizal University.

Holdovers Vira Guillema, Joyce Sta. Rita, Nikka Dalisay, Dangie Encarnacion and libero Alyssa Eroa will banner the squad, who will try to snatch one of the two semifinals slots at stake in the group stage.

The Lady Stags mentor will also use the tournament to give exposure to his four of senior high recruits Jewelle Bermillo, Elka Dela Torre, Ritanhelle Perez and Akeyla Delos Reyes.

The Lady Stags will open its campaign against FEU on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
