All eyes are set on Marck Espejo as he leads Ateneo de Manila University's campaign in the PVL Collegiate Conference.
Top title contenders Ateneo de Manila University and National University begin their respective campaigns in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference men’s division Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The three-time UAAP champion Blue Eagles cross paths with Far Eastern University at 1:00 p.m. in a match that will air via livestream.
Ateneo is gunning for a third straight crown in the same conference after dominating the two editions of the tournament of the now defunct V-League in unbeaten championship runs.
Reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player Marck Espejo, top setter Ish Polvorosa, Karl Baysa, Ron Medalla and libero Manuel Sumanguid are back to banner the Katipunan-based squad, which lost veterans Rex Intal and Josh Villanueva who both exhausted all their playing eligibility.
But the Blue Eagles will dearly miss the services of 6-foot-8 Russian-American Tony Koyfman due to health issues. He has an illness in his lungs that requires an operation.
Still, Ateneo remains a team-to-beat but is expected to face a tough challenge against the Tamaraws bannered by an almost intact lineup led by national team member Peter Quiel.
Richard Solis , Jeremiah Barrica, Rikko Marmeto and John Paul Bugaoan.
Meanwhile, NU battles San Beda College at 10:00 a.m.
The Bulldogs, runner-ups in three UAAP seasons, will pin their hopes in their holdovers Bryan Bagunas, Kim Dayandante, James Natividad, Francis Saura, Kim Malabunga and Madzlan Gampong.
Leading San Beda are Mark Enciso, Mark Santos, John Desuyo and Adrian Viray.
