University of Sto. Tomas opened its campaign with a straight sets drubbing of University of the Philippines.
De La Salle University and University of Sto. Tomas opened their respective campaigns in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference men's division on a high note Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Green Spikers banked on the trio of Cris Dumago, Arjay Onia and Raymark Woo to turn back sister-team College of St. Benilde, 25-27, 26-24, 25-23, 25-22, before the Tigers joined DLSU in the opening day winners’ list in a walk in the park, 25-17, 25-22, 25-15, win over University of the Philippines.
Setter Wayne Marco orchestrated DLSU’s balanced offense, dishing out 38 excellent sets in the Green Spikers 63 total kill points including 15 each coming from Dumago and Onia.
Dumago finished with 18 points while Woo and Onia added 16 markers each for DLSU. John Delos Reyes had 11.
Isaah Arda scored 21 points built on 18 kills, a pair of kill blocks and an ace for the reigning NCAA champions Blazers, who are looking for a fresh start after the departure of ace hitter and national team skipper John Vic De Guzman.
Meanwhile, UST took advantage of UP’s 28 errors to walk away with an easy win.
Joshua Umandal was the only Tigers player in double-digit scoring with 13 points, 11 off attacks. Arnold Bautista and Jayvee Sumagsaysay, who only saw action in the first two sets, combined for 14 markers for the Espana-based squad.
