Ateneo De Manila University whipped Jose Rizal University in straight sets to open its PVL Collegiate Conference campaign on a high note.
Ateneo de Manila barely broke a sweat as it cruised past Jose Rizal University, 25-17, 25-15, 25-15, Saturday in Group A of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Skipper Bea De Leon smashed 11 kills in her 14-point explosion for the Lady Eagles while Kat Tolentino scored all of her 11 markers off attacks.
Jules Samonte and Maddie Madayag each had 10 points for the rebuilding Katipunan-based squad, which is trying to adjust after the departure of ace setter Jia Morado and top hitter Michelle Morente after the last UAAP season.
"It's a good start obviously for us and I hope it continues naman," said de Leon.
"(But) every year it's a new team, we have to start all over again. We're a rebuilding team, we take it one step at a time," she added.
It was total domination for the taller Lady Eagles as they unleashed 45 attack points overall, clogged the net with seven kill blocks including four from Madayag while landing nine service aces against the Lady Bombers.
Deanna Wong passed her debut as the team’s main setter with flying colors, dishing out 32 excellent sets much to the delight of Morado, who was tapped to join Tai Bundit’s coaching staff.
JRU created only 26 points the whole match with 22 coming off spikes and four from the service line. The rest of their points came from Ateneo’s 21 errors.
Karen Montojo and Shola Alvarez scored nine each while Dolly Versoza got seven for the Kalentong-based squad.
