Nakakapanibago -- Soltones on new role as assistant coach

From being San Sebastian College’s ace hitter and go-to-player, Grethcel Soltones is now playing a different role: calling the shots from the sidelines.

The three-time NCAA Most Valuable Player was tapped by head coach Roger Gorayeb as his assistant coach in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference.

“Hindi pa rin makapaniwala kasi dati naglalaro ako for my school pero now nagko-coach na,” said Soltones, who together with another former Lady Stag Kath Villegas sat on the bench as deputies of Gorayeb.

“Sinabihan ako ni coach if gusto ko raw na mag-assistant coach after ng last PVL conference,” said Soltones, who starred in BaliPure’s Open Conference conquest. “OK lang naman sa akin.”

Soltones, who exhausted all her playing eligibility, admitted that she’s still learning the ropes of her new role.

“Ayun inaasar nila kami ni Kath. Sakto lang (na tawagin nila akong coach) pero siyempre nakakapanibago,” she said.

Unfortunately, Soltones’ debut as an assistant tactician was spoiled by the seasoned Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 17-25, 21-25, 14-25, Sunday in Group A of the elimination round at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

“They are still young and they need to improve themselves also,” said Soltones. “Kailangan nilang matuto talaga kaya hinahayaan na lang namin.”

While Soltones wanted her former teammates to adjust and improve on their own, Villegas said that she was tempted to go in and play especially when the Lady Tams were pummeling the Lady Stags.

“Sabi ko nga kanina kay Gretch na ‘Tara Gretch bihis na tayo’ Nakaka-miss na kasing maglaro eh,” said Villegas.

Soltones and Villegas joined the ranks of other former players who jumped into coaching.

Ateneo de Manila University standout Alyssa Valdez acted as coach Tai Bundit’s assistant during the Lady Eagles' campaign in the defunct V-League’s Collegiate Conference last year.

Setter Jia Morado is currently Bundit’s assistant coach.
