Tigers claw Green Spikers, take solo lead

University of Sto. Tomas prevailed over UAAP rival De La Salle University in straight sets, 25-17, 25-13, 25-22, on Monday for an early hold of the solo lead in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference men’s division at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Tigers easily clawed its way past the Green Spikers to remain unscathed after two outings.
Joshua Umandal picked up from where he left off when he scored 13 points in UST’s sweep of University of the Philippine last Saturday, this time dropping14 markers to lead the Espana-based squad to another victory.
Umandal scored all of his points from attacks. Jayvee Sumagaysay and Arnold Bautista provided the support with nine points each while Manuel Medina had eight for UST, which will face its biggest test on Saturday against Ateneo de Manila University.
DLSU dropped to 1-1 win-loss record tied with UP.
Cris Dumago finished with 14 points as the only Green Spiker in double figures.
Meanwhile, the Maroons recovered from their opening day setback with a marathon, 25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 21-25, 16-14, win over College of St. Benilde.
Wendel Miguel exploded with 22 points, 20 coming off attacks, while Nicolo Consuelo scored 19 markers for the Diliman-based squad. Team captain Jerry San Pedro and Matthew Gohoc chipped in 16 and 10 points, respectively.
The reigning NCAA champion Blazers absorbed their second defeat in as many outings.
Isaah Arda saw his 22 points come into naught after another painful loss for the Taft-based squad. CSB received a four-set beating against DLSU last Saturday.
