Andrea Marzan of Arellano University reaches for the ball in a joust against Jiezela Viray and Trisha Paras of San Beda College.
Arellano University turned back San Beda College in straight sets, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18, Wednesday to take the solo lead in Group B of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The reigning NCAA champions claimed their second straight win in as many outings to remain on top of the bracket while dealing the Lady Red Spikers their first loss in two games.
Regine Arocha led the Lady Chiefs with 16 points off 11 kills, three aces and a pair of kill blocks. Skipper Jovielyn Prado had 13 while Mary Ann Esguerra added 1o for Arellano, which exacted revenge on the Lady Red Spikers, who defeated them in another pre-season tournament months ago.
“Inaral lang namin ‘yung game namin doon (sa pre-season tournament) tapos ‘yun ang resulta,” said Arellano U coach Obet Javier, whose wards will take an acid test against Adamson University on Saturday.
“’Yung talo na ‘yun ang naging motivation namin na matalo ‘yung Beda ngayon,” he added. “Halos inaral namin ‘yung palo nila at depensa. Tugma naman tsaka nag-focus kami sa service receive kasi nung nakaraan doon kami nadadali.”
Arellano U was threatened, 6-8, early in the third set before Arocha took matters on her own hands to spark a telling rally that gave the Lady Chiefs a 21-15 cushion.
Cesca Racraquin had a quiet outing with only nine points after scoring 19 in the Lady red Spikers’ win over Technological Institute of the Philippines in their debut.
Nieza Viray was the only San Beda player in double figures with 13 points.
