Joyce Sta. Rita of San Sebastian College hits the ball away from Jose Rizal University's defense.
San Sebastian College bounced back from an opening day setback with a dominating 25-23, 25-22, 25-21, win over Jose Rizal University Wednesday in Group A of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The Lady Stags improved their win-loss record to 1-1 but head coach Roger Gorayeb was far from satisfied with his team’s performance especially with the holdovers from their last year’s roster.
Skipper Joyce Sta. Rita scored 16 points coming off 12 attacks, three kill blocks and an ace while Nikka Dalisay and Daurene Santos finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the Lady Stags, who lost its main scorer in Grethcel Soltones after the three-time NCAA Most Valuable Player exhausted all of her playing eligibility.
“’Di ko malaman. ‘Yung way of thinking nila ‘di nila mabago. Tawag ko nga sa kanila veteran-rookie kasi beterano na sila sa laro pero para silang rookie mag-isip. Parang lagi lang silang naghahanap ng Grethcel Soltones na papalo sa kanila ng malakas, na papalo sa kanila sa backline,” said Gorayeb, whose team opened the tournament with a straight sets loss tro Far Eastern University.
“Hindi na uubra ‘yan,” added Gorayeb, whose wards will take on his former UAAP team National University on Monday. “Sinasabi ko sa kanila na panahon na para tumayo kayo sa sarili n’yong paa.”
The Lady Bombers dropped their second straight match in as many outings.
Shola Alvarez had 13 points – all from kills – while Dolly Versoza got 11 markers for JRU.
