Though starting as new coach of the Lady Tamaraws in the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference, George Pascua (sixth from right, back row) is an old hand at Far Eastern University, first as a champion spiker in his UAAP years and later as head coach of the FEU men’s team for 11 years. Also in the photo is his assistant coach, Ariel Canlas, and trainer, Rey Diaz Jr.
Coach George Pascua is happy to be back in his alma mater as mentor of the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws this time around.
He was previously head coach of the FEU men’s squad for 11 years marked by four championships and two runner-up finishes in the UAAP before he left for the proverbial greener pasture.
Both coach and players are bringing to the table new valuable contributions, Pascua his additional coaching know-how learned and perfected from his prolific stints outside collegiate leagues and at least more than half of his players their exposure in the tougher world of commercial volleyball.
As products of the FEU volleyball program, coach and players needed little to adjust to each other even if the new mentor had only barely two months to prepare the women for the Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference.
Powered by the veteran trio of Bernadeth Pons, Toni Rose Basas and Jerrili Dimaranan, the Lady Tamaraws are touted to be one of the teams to beat in the season-ending tournament of the PVL, another grand event organized by Sports Vision with Asics as official league partner and Mikasa as official game ball.
Except for Celine Elaiza Domingo and Marianne Marie Calinawan of Talisay City, Cebu, the rest of the team are carryovers from at least two previous UAAP squads of FEU, a Final Four finisher in the last season.
Domingo, a Cavitena from Gen. Trias, is a transferee from University of the East who, according to Pascua, is taking over the middle blocker position vacated by the highly efficient Remy Palma.
Prior to accepting the position as head coach of the Lady Tamaraws, Pascua said he was able to get the university management to agree to two of his prime conditions: overseas training and studies for the players and coaching staff, respectively.
Making up the FEU women’s team are: Carlota Hernandez, Bernadeth Pons, Heather Anne Guino-o, Ria Beatriz Duremdez, Ivana Marie Agudo, Maria Angelica Cayuna, Marianne Marie Calinawan, Toni Rose Basas, Kyle Llana Atienza, Kyle Angela Negrito, Celine Elaiza Domingo, Czarina Grace Carandang, Jerrili Dimaranan, and Jeanette Villareal.
Head coach, George Pascua; assistant coach, Ariel Canlas; trainer, Rei Diaz Jr.; and trainer/therapist, Marilou Regidor.
